Why are we so concerned about Myopia (nearsightedness)?
Generally, a nearsighted eye is out of focus because it is too long. With growth of a myopic child or young adult their eyes become even longer and more nearsighted. As an eye expands, sensitive and delicate tissues are stretched and may become more fragile in later adulthood.
Adults with myopia have an increased incidence of retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataract, and myopic maculopathy. However, even small reductions in the rate of progression of myopia may have a significant impact on the incidence of complications in later life.

Our office is currently working with two approaches to slow the progression of myopia:
1. Nightly instillation of Atropine eye drops.
2. A daily disposable soft contact lens that has been approved by the FDA for myopia control in children ages 8 to 15 years.
